Black Hole Mergers through Evection Resonances

چکیده

Abstract Mechanisms have been proposed to enhance the merger rate of stellar-mass black hole binaries, such as Von Zeipel–Lidov–Kozai mechanism (vZLK). However, high inclinations are required in order greatly excite eccentricity and reduce time through vZLK. Here, we propose a novel pathway which compact binaries could merge due increase general, including near coplanar configuration. Specifically, binary migrating an active galactic nucleus disk be captured evection resonance, when precession equals orbital period around supermassive hole. In our study include first-order post-Newtonian well that one or both components binary. Eccentricity is excited sweeps happens only it migrates on timescale 10–100 times libration resonance. Libration decreases mass increases. The excitation can by up factor ?10 3?5 .

Black hole binary mergers

I overview the current understanding of the evolution of massive black hole (MBH) binaries in the center of the host stellar system. One of the main questions is whether the stellar dynamical effect can make the MBH binary hard enough that they can merge through gravitational wave radiation. So far, theories and numerical simulations suggested otherwize, since the hardening timescale becomes ve...

Binary black hole mergers

www.physicstoday.org After decades of effort, numerical relativists can now simulate the inspiral and merger of two black holes orbiting each other. That computational triumph has come none too soon—physicists are on the verge of detecting gravitational waves for the first time, and at long last they know what to look for. Black holes are strong-field objects whose properties are governed by Ei...

Supermassive black hole binary mergers

Massive merging black holes will be the primary sources of powerful gravitational waves at low frequency, and will permit to test General Relativity if we identify candidate galaxies that are close to a binary black hole merger. In this paper we show that for a typical range of mass ratios of the two black holes the final stage of the merger is preceded by a rapid precession and a subsequent sp...

Supermassive binary black hole mergers

When galaxies collide, dynamical friction drives their central supermassive black holes close enought to each other such that gravitational radiation becomes the leading dissipative effect. Gravitational radiation takes away energy, momentum and angular momentum from the compact binary, such that the black holes finally merge. In the process, the spin of the dominant black hole is reoriented. O...

Tracing black hole mergers through radio lobe morphology.

Binary supermassive black holes are produced by galactic mergers as the black holes from the two galaxies fall to the center of the merged system and form a bound pair. The two black holes will eventually coalesce in an enormous burst of gravitational radiation. Here we show that the orientation of a black hole's spin axis would change dramatically even in a minor merger, leading to a sudden fl...
